Saint Valentine “conversation hearts”

Remember the little pastel-colored conversation hearts with messages…

Well, we have recreated them Catholic Playground-style complete with Scripture messages perfect for a Saint Valentine’s Day party!

We made sugar cookies using the following recipe:

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In a large bowl cream butter and sugar with an electric mixer. Beat in egg and vanilla. Mix baking powder and flour, add one cup at a time, mixing after each addition. The dough may be stiff, but will soften up as you roll it. (It is best to use a large or extra large egg with this recipe). This dough does not need to be refrigerated and can be rolled out immediately after mixing.

We rolled the dough 3/4 inch thick,  cut them with a 3 1/2 inch wide cookie cutter, then baked them for approximately 10 minutes.

While the cookies were cooling, we mixed this icing (this icing spreads easily, smooths itself out and will dry to a hard finish) :

*2 Tbsp milk
*2 Tbsp light corn syrup
*2 cups confectioners sugar

then-
divided it into 6 batches, coloring them to match the classic “candy heart” colors:

We chose a dozen short Bible verses to put on the cookies-

For a good icing for lettering (or other decorations), we like to use the following recipe:

1/4 cup butter, softened
2 tsp milk
1/2 tsp vanilla
4/3 cups confectioners sugar

(This icing also dries to a hard finish, which means cookies can be easily stacked when dry).

Because we were making this for a Saint Valentine’s Day party, we thought it would be fun to serve them from a  “box of candy.”

On the right side below is the original box of candy hearts and on the left is our recreated “candy box” made from a cereal box.
We chose shorter Bible verses that would fit easily on a cookie…

…and, of course, changed the name on our box!
