Saint Raymond Nonnatus coloring page: August 31st

August 30, 2013August, Coloring, Saints Coloring Standard

Born in Spain, Raymond was delivered by Caesarean section because his mother died during childbirth. His name “Nonnatus” is Latin, meaning “not born.” When he was old enough, he joined the Mercedarians, an order dedicated to ransoming Christian slaves in Northern Africa. He is credited with ransoming hundreds of slaves. On a trip to Tunis, his money ran out and he offered himself as a hostage for 28 captives. There, he was tortured and was sentenced to be impaled. Raymond’s lips were padlocked to prevent his preaching and he was forced to run the gauntlet. The Order rescued the brave priest, but he died a year later. He was canonized in 1657. Because of his unique birth, he is the patron of childbirth, midwives, and pregnant women.
