Habemus Papam! A coloring page for Pope Francis!

March 18, 2013Catholic Coloring, Coloring, Pope Francis Standard

The Catholic Church has a new pope!

The former Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio was elected as the Church’s 266th pope on March 13th. Though he comes from the South American country of Argentina, he was born to Italian parents in 1936. Just 33 years later, he became a Jesuit priest. Pope Francis is the first Jesuit pope and the first pope from the Americas.

Pope Francis is known for being a simple and very humble man. Before blessing the crowd awaiting his first appearance in St. Peter’s Square, Pope Francis asked for everyone to pray for Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI and himself. The night after the election, he refused to ride in the special car provided just for the pope. Instead, he rode the bus with the other cardinals, collected his own luggage, and wanted to pay for his own hotel room.

The cardinal chose the name “Francis” as his papal name, a name that has never been chosen by any other pope. Though he is the first pope to be Francis, he will be known as Pope Francis. He will not be known as “Pope Francis I” until one day when another cardinal takes the papal name “Francis.”

Pray for our new pope!
